Faq Ayahuasca
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca is a sacred Amazonian plant medicine traditionally used by indigenous peoples for healing, spiritual connection, and guidance. It is a brew made from the Ayahuasca vine and other plants that open visionary states of awareness.
Is Ayahuasca safe?
When taken under the guidance of experienced healers in a safe and supportive environment, Ayahuasca is generally safe. However, certain health conditions and medications may create risks. This is why we conduct thorough medical and psychological screening before participation.
How should I prepare for the retreat?
Preparation includes following a special dieta (dietary and lifestyle restrictions) before arrival. This involves avoiding alcohol, drugs, red meat, processed foods, excess sugar, and sexual activity. Emotional and mental preparation, such as meditation or journaling, is also recommended.
What happens during a ceremony?
Ceremonies are led by Shipibo healers who guide the process through icaros (healing songs), prayers, and energetic cleansing. Participants drink the Ayahuasca brew in a sacred space, then journey inward while the healers provide support, protection, and guidance.
Will I purge during the retreat?
Purging (vomiting, sweating, crying, or emotional release) is common and considered part of the healing process. It is a way the body and spirit release toxins, blockages, and negative energy. Not every participant purges, but many do.
What if I feel afraid during the experience?
It is natural to feel fear when entering unknown states of consciousness. Our facilitators and shamans are present throughout the ceremony to ensure your safety, comfort, and support. Trusting the process and focusing on your breath helps ease difficult moments.
How many ceremonies are included in the retreat?
The number of ceremonies depends on the retreat length. Our 8-day retreat typically includes 3–4 ceremonies, while the 14-day retreat offers 6–7. Each is carefully spaced to allow rest, integration, and preparation for the next.
What happens if guests feel overwhelmed?
Facilitators are trained to support guests experiencing emotional or physical distress. During ceremonies, staff monitor closely and offer grounding techniques, such as breathing exercises or physical reassurance. One-on-one consultations with Demetrio or Sergio provide additional support. Post-ceremony integration circles and rest periods in tambos help guests process intense experiences in a safe space.
What accommodations are provided?
Guests stay in eco-friendly tambos (private jungle huts) with mosquito nets, basic bedding, and access to shared, clean bathrooms. The retreat includes a communal dining area for dieta-compliant meals and a maloca for ceremonies and circles. The setting near the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo National Reserve offers a serene, natural environment with river access.
How do I integrate the experience afterward?
Integration is the key to lasting transformation. We offer integration circles during the retreat and post-retreat guidance. Practices such as journaling, meditation, connecting with nature, and maintaining a clean lifestyle help you embody the teachings of Ayahuasca.
Can guests contact the retreat team after returning home?
Yes, guests can reach the team via email or the online community platform for post-retreat support. Virtual sessions and therapist referrals provide ongoing guidance. The retreat team is committed to helping guests apply the plant’s lessons in daily life.
What should guests bring to the retreat?
Guests should bring lightweight, breathable clothing (long sleeves and pants for mosquito protection), a reusable water bottle, a journal, a flashlight, insect repellent, and personal toiletries. Medications must be disclosed in advance. Avoid bringing valuables or non-dieta foods. A packing list is provided upon booking.
Is Ayahuasca legal?
In Peru and other parts of the Amazon, Ayahuasca is legal and recognized as part of indigenous cultural and spiritual heritage. Our retreats take place in accordance with local laws and ancestral traditions.
