Guidance & Safety
Sacred Guidance for Your Transformation
At Amazon Jungle Retreat, located near the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo National Reserve, our Master Plant Diet Retreats are anchored in sacred guidance and unwavering commitment to safety. Led by Shaman Demetrio, a master of Shipibo vegetalismo, and supported by Sergio, son of revered Achuar shaman Don Ramón Arahuanaza, in collaboration with the Achuar community of Jerusalén and Hector Vezirian of Amazon Explorer, we create a nurturing, reverent space for guests’ healing journey. Our team ensures that every participant in our small groups (8–15 guests) is supported with care and expertise.

Our Sacred Guides
- Shaman Demetrio: With over 30 years of experience in Shipibo-Konibo traditions, Demetrio channels plant spirits through icaros, guiding guests through emotional and spiritual healing with profound wisdom and protection during the dieta.
- Sergio: Inheriting the Achuar lineage of Don Ramón Arahuanaza, Sergio brings cultural depth and intuitive support, offering Achuar songs and personalized consultations to enhance guests’ journey with master plants.
- Facilitators: Our trained facilitators, including members of the Jerusalén community, provide compassionate support, cultural translation, and practical assistance, ensuring a seamless experience for guests.
With a 1:3 healer-to-guest ratio, our team offers individualized attention during plant ceremonies, baths, and integration sessions, fostering a safe and sacred environment.
Emotional & Spiritual Protection
The dieta is not only physical—it is energetic. Our Shipibo healers and facilitators create a safe space through icaros (healing songs), prayers, and cleansing rituals. Floral baths, protective tobacco prayers, and sacred songs ensure that heavy or intrusive energies are released, so the dieta can unfold in harmony.
Ensuring Your Safety
Your safety is our top priority. We implement comprehensive protocols to protect guests’ physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being during the Master Plant Diet:
- Pre-Retreat Health Screening: A mandatory health questionnaire and consultation with Demetrio and Sergio evaluate physical and mental readiness. We assess medical history, current conditions, and intentions to ensure the dieta is safe for guests.
- Medication Management: Full disclosure of all medications, supplements, and recreational substances is required. Certain medications, particularly SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, sertraline), MAOIs, antipsychotics, or other antidepressants, can interact with master plants, potentially causing adverse effects. Guests on such medications must taper off under medical supervision, typically 4–8 weeks before the retreat, depending on the drug (e.g., 4 weeks for fluoxetine due to its long half-life, 2 weeks for sertraline). Other medications, such as antihistamines, benzodiazepines, or blood pressure drugs, are reviewed case-by-case. We provide a detailed tapering guide and require consultation with a healthcare provider to ensure a safe transition. Guests must submit a medical clearance form if on such medications.
- Medical Oversight: Our facilitators monitor participants daily and respond to any concerns with care and experience.
- Dieta Protocols: Plant ceremonies and baths occur in a secure maloca with trained staff, emergency kits, and controlled plant dosing tailored to each guest’s needs. Facilitators monitor for physical or emotional distress throughout the sessions.
- Facilitator Training: Our team, including Jerusalén community members, is trained in first aid, crisis intervention, and cultural sensitivity to manage any challenges, ensuring a compassionate response to emotional or physical reactions during the dieta.
- Post-Dieta Care: After daily ceremonies, guests receive dieta-compliant snacks (e.g., fruit, broth), access to rest areas, and immediate support through integration sessions to ground experiences safely.
We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for non-prescribed substances and ensure strict confidentiality to foster trust and safety.
Dieta Guidelines
The dieta is a container of discipline that allows the plants to cleanse and teach. To honor the process, we ask participants to follow these guidelines:
- – Eat simple, clean foods free of salt, sugar, oil, heavy spices, and processed ingredients.
- – Avoid red meat, pork, and fermented products.
- – No alcohol, caffeine, stimulants, or recreational substances.
- – Abstain from sexual activity during the dieta to preserve energy and focus.
- – Limit emotional, digital, and mental distractions to stay fully present with the plants.
We maintain a zero-tolerance policy for non-prescribed substances and ensure strict confidentiality to foster trust and safety.
