The Guardians of Medicine

Our Healers and Facilitators

At Amazon Jungle Retreat, near the Tamshiyacu Tahuayo National Reserve, our healers and facilitators are the guardians of ancient Amazonian traditions. Led by Shaman Demetrio and Sergio, son of revered Achuar shaman Don Ramón Arahuanaza, in collaboration with the Achuar community of Jerusalén and Hector Vezirian of Amazon Explorer, they create a space of safety, support, and connection. Through their wisdom, values, and personal stories, guests are invited to trust the healing process and feel deeply held.

Meet the Guardians

Shaman Demetrio

Demetrio, a revered Shipibo-Konibo shaman from the Peruvian Amazon, grew up in a remote community where plant medicine was a way of life. Apprenticed under his grandfather at age 10, he spent years in isolation dieting with master plants, learning to sing icaros and channel their spirits. With over 30 years of experience, Demetrio values respect for nature, compassion in healing, and humility before the medicine. His story is one of dedication—surviving a serious illness through plant remedies, which deepened his commitment to sharing this wisdom. Guests feel safe in his presence, knowing his icaros provide protection and guidance during ceremonies.

Sergio

Sergio, son of the renowned Achuar shaman Don Ramón Arahuanaza, was raised in the village of Jerusalén, where he learned Achuar traditions from a young age. As a child, he accompanied his father on healing rituals, absorbing the values of community harmony, respect for the selva, and spiritual integrity. Now a healer in his own right, Sergio’s personal story includes overcoming a period of cultural disconnection during his youth, which led him to reclaim his lineage and dedicate his life to plant medicine. He brings warmth and empathy to the retreat, ensuring guests feel supported and connected to the Achuar heritage.

Our Facilitators

Our facilitators, drawn from the Achuar community of Jerusalén, embody the values of unity, service, and reverence for the land. Many, like Maria, a Jerusalén elder, have stories of growing up with plant medicine as family tradition, learning to weave crafts and prepare baths from their grandparents. They provide practical support, cultural translation, and emotional care, helping guests feel safe and integrated. Their commitment to sharing Achuar values fosters a sense of family, ensuring every participant is held with compassion.
