SAFETY PROTOCOLS

  • We work with small groups of no more than 18 people per ceremony. This personal focus ensures every individual receives the maximum personal attention, enhancing the experience comfort and safety of the retreat.

  • All the Ayahuasca provided is a simple mixture of Ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi) and Chacruna (Psychotria viridis), nothing else is added. Ayahuasca is a medicinal sacred plant not a recreative drug. Only shamans who has been initiated since childhood knows its proper use it. Our healers do not mix Ayahuasca with other plants or substances just to have a “trip”.

  • We work together with a doctor who will check the personal information and medications you sent during booking process, and after your arrival in Iquitos our doctor will check personally every guest.

  • Our private transport is available at all times during the retreat.

MEDICAL GUIDELINES

  • Ayahuasca is a preparation that combines different plants from the Amazon jungle, ancestrally used by the shamans of some towns in the rainforest.

  • Keep in mind that using Ayahuasca or traditional Amazonian medicine is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric treatment.

  • For the mass majority of people Ayahuasca is completely safe and very beneficial, there are rare occasions when it’s not so safe due to certain medical conditions and pharmaceutical medications. Certain drugs and medications have been found to be un-compatible with Ayahuasca, hence it is required follow some guidelines:

  • If you are currently undergoing treatment of any kind or taking any medication, drug or recreational substance, you must provide us with full details of your situation prior to booking.

  • It is necessary for each traveler to complete a file with their personal data, where they must detail their medical condition and if they are using any medicine, drug or recreational substance, since certain substances are harmful with the use of Ayahuasca. The information you send us is confidential.

  • It is not safe to work with Ayahuasca if you take the following medications or have any of the following medical conditions:It is not safe to work with Ayahuasca if you take the following medications or have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Any medicine that contains monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), these medicines are known to cause dangerous side effects when taken together with Ayahuasca. It is essential that you stop taking these medications and allow enough time for your body to eliminate these substances. Remember to consult with your doctor before making this decision.

  • Any medication that has an effect on the serotonin system, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (ie antidepressants such as Wellbutrin, Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, etc.). You should also not take preparations based on St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum).

  • Other medications to stop are decongestants, cold medications, allergy medications, antihistamines, sedatives, tranquilizers, amphetamines (including Adderall), some high blood pressure medications, sympathomimetic amines including pseudoephedrine and ephedrine, carbamazipine, methylfemidate ( Ritalin), macromerin, phenelanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, asarone/calamus, asthma inhalers, and diet pills.

  • Although ayahuasca has not been found to cause psychosis or other psychiatric disorders, it can be difficult for people with a very long history of psychological problems. Tell us, in confidence, about any history of mental health problems.

  • Two weeks prior to the retreat with Master Plants, Amazon Jungle Retreat recommends detoxification, following our previous diet (FOLLOW LINK 001 – PREPARATION FOR THE RETREAT).

  • Remember that medicines prescribed by a doctor cannot be stopped abruptly. You should consult your doctor about the possibility of stopping taking them at least 4 weeks prior to taking ayahuasca.

  • Ayahuasca is contraindicated for people with a heart condition or chronic high blood pressure, pregnant women, and people with diabetes. We will not be able to accept people with these conditions for Ayahuasca shots.

  • People with cardiovascular and endocrinological disorders and individuals with severe behavioral and personality disorders should refrain from taking Ayahuasca. For more details, follow (FOLLOW LINK 002 – PREPARATION FOR THE RETIREMENT).

  • Any medical conditions should be reported to Amazon Jungle Retreat staff so they are aware and can handle any potential issues should they arise.

PRE RETREAT PREPARATION

Two weeks prior, avoid from:
  • Pork.
  • Sexual activity, including masturbation.
  • Alcohol.
  • Cannabis.
  • All street o recreative drugs (cocaine, ecstasy or MDMA, amphetamines, etc.).
  • Spicy food.
  • Ice, ice cream, or ice cold drinks.

One Week prior, avoid from:
  • Refined sugars
  • Red meat
  • Junk foods
  • Salt or pepper
  • Sweets or chocolate
  • Oils (if you must use oil, use olive or coconut oil very sparingly)
  • Animal fats (lard, etc.)
  • Carbonated drinks (including diet sodas, energy drinks, non-alcoholic beer)
  • Dairy products
  • Fermented foods
  • Caffeine & other stimulants.

Additional Recommendations:
  • Please contact us if you are currently taking any medication or supplements, in order to talk with our doctor. We also strongly suggest talk with your doctor too.
  • If you will be menstruating during the retreat, please inform us when you arrive.
  • Ayahuasca is not compatible with pregnancy.
  • Avoidance of synthetic soaps, perfumes, toiletries, etc.
  • Following the recommended diet is essential to your safety. The cleaner your body is, the less “purging” you will need to do in order to clean your body.

Spiritual and mental preparation:
  • For your spiritual and mental preparation before your retreat, we recommend that you meditate or pray.
  • The idea is to open your mind to seek change for the better. This is an interior and very personal work. Only you have the power to change your destiny.
  • A positive attitude prior to the retreat is the best for a fruitful experience. This attitude must include love, humility and respect.
  • When you pray, give thanks for what has been granted and ask for opportunities to improve.

CARE POST RETREAT

Two weeks after, avoid from:

For two to four weeks after, avoid from:
  • Pork
  • Cannabis and all plant medicines

To take advantage of the healing and cleansing of your body, it is strongly suggested keep a healthy diet after your retreat, including avoid the following:
  • Refined sugar

  • Carbonated drinks (including diet sodas, energy drinks, non-alcoholic beer)
  • Red meat
  • Salt or pepper
  • Sweets or chocolate
  • Oils
  • Animal fats (lard, etc.)
  • Dairy products
